game brightness issues

I use a monitor that is natuaraly dark so usually I turn up the gamma in games or by ATI control center, oddly in Vista this doesnt seem to work, in all of my games save one the built in gamma and brightness controls along with ATIs controls are ignored making it almost impossible to see. The only game in which the in game controls work is Star Wars Galaxies. Is there anyway to fix this?
